My parents promptly want to go to Chicago for a week, during their 3 week stay in the US. While I love Chicago myself, I've been hesitant about how it will suit them. They are not the easiest of people to satisfy, partly because both of them have fairly complex and different tastes even from each other.
On the plus side, Chicago offers a wide variety of cultural sights and amusement. On the minus side...it takes either money or leg-power to get around the area. (the El is nice though, and a good option I suppose).
I will be coming with them for a few days time, just to introduce them to the city, and I did find us really kick-ass cheap flying tickets, but what almost turned my hair grey last night was when I checked out hotel/motel rates. Christ on a cracker is it costly! (previous times I've been to Chicago I've lived with friends, so I've never had to deal with this issue in this particular area)
Mom and dad are friends with a couple who went to Chicago last year and claimed to have stayed at a Days Inn in the down town area for around $ 90/night...and after looking up stuff on line I have a hard time believing that! Most places costing under 100/night are either in the suburbs or get only one star out of five.
I found one Days Inn in the downtown area, but it didn't have rooms available for those particular dates in late September early October.
I really don't want them to pour out buckets of money on hotel rooms, particularly since we might have to rent a car while there.
Any tips, anyone? A two star place is just fine. Simple is fine, as long as it's clean. It doesn't have to be completely down town, but it has to be within the city and not in some fricking suburb. It can also be located near Midway airport, because I know there's a nice shuttle from that area into the core of the city.
oh, and also, if you've been to the windy city or live/lived there, feel free to give me some suggestions on activities or nice stuff happening the last days of September or the first two days of October.
ETA: okay, I just talked to a really helpful lady at hotels.com and she explained some location questions for me. I have pre-booked a 3-bed room at a place called Heart O'Chicago Motel, which is in the city, only not fancy. But me being willing to share rooms with parents will cut the cost significantly. I may suffer a mental breakdown, but that's another matter I suppose...
Give me some tips on what to visit and do and where to eat instead!!
Thanks a ton guys, all help appreciated!
