I saw Polanski's The Pianist with [livejournal.com profile] northernveil tonight. Very powerful, based on many authentic testimonies, as well as Shpielmans autobiography.

It is also the first time I see such vivid reconstructions of Warsaw from before WW2. It was such a beautiful city, called Paris of Central Europe once upon a time. Broad boulevards and lush parks, and architecture very similar to that of Budapest or Prague. No more of course, it was one of the most thoroughly bombed cities during that war, along with Dresden.
Nowadays the architecture is from the ugly communist sixties, and if one wants to see a truly beautiful city in that country one has to travel east, to Krakow.

My dad grew up among those ruins, he was born right after the war, and it took plenty of time to rebuild. He should see the film, the city moves and is alive, not like the black and white photos I have seen.

We process so many strong emotions through film...
In the saddest and most difficult parts of my life when I felt quite numb, some movies actually enabled me to process the necessary spectrum of feelings in order to cope. The same can be said for some music.
I guess it can be described as the lighter version of how razorblades are used by some troubled souls, in order to make certain things more real.
