So, chicks and roosters; you know when you're in a discussion group, or reading a discussion on a discussion board or in a LJ community etc and there are always a couple of wannabe alpha males either bonding or pulling each others pigtails? Well, say that they're bonding, right?
There is after the bonding often this moment when one of them cracks something vaguely or directly sexist (and unfortunately sometimes it's funny, because sadly some sexism is just as funny as it's depressing). And then this sexist hilarity goes on..and no one on the list or in the discussion is saying anything..because basically they are either a bit intimidated or they have this very basic spinal kind of lingo-fashion sense where they can't really muck with what's funny, because funny will always be classed higher than PC, even if there is this authentic urgency in the core of the PC issue, that's not PC at all...just urgent.
But anyway, funny will ALWAYS come before urgent on a top-five list - this said entirely without sarcasm. And this is why sexism works in discussions - as long as it is genuinely and really funny. There are very few good ways to respond to completely funny sexism, except by being even funnier yourself. And being totally funnier yourself in front of funny sexist alpha males can only be done in two ways: 1) You become this complete pig yourself, oink oink, piss on everything, the weak, the raped, the hott, the crippled, everything is just game - set - match. Trust me, there is no real art to this if you want to pander, I've even seen fairly mediocre (as far as hilarity goes) attempts by females to spit on their own sex, being lauded by the sexist AM (alpha males) because the speaker has breasts and is "on the team" - but even if you are frickin' hilarious, and not at all out to pander, but to show them some serious chin - if you fall into the pig/oink trap, no matter how funny you are, your original impulse to join the discussion is lost. The only thing you've accomplished is to show that women can be funny too. Haha.
And then there is way number 2)which is to stand up for the un-sexist opinion in a hilarious way, which is unbelievably hard. I've only seen it done with some success about a handful of times in my life. But it's been done. Hail Jeanne D'arc, she'll burn some day, but she didn't that day!
A few times an alpha-like female, some popular or at least moderately well liked female member of the group breaks in to the discussion anyway, in spite of the extremely unsexy atmosphere it casts on her for breaking up the funny - and this often gets mildly interesting, because then you can observe one out of 3 things happening in the group dynamics:
1. They ignore her (this means she is only moderately well liked, they don't have to suck up to her, but they don't want to be too rude to her either)
2. They try their alpha power in the group against hers, who is the coolest and has the most impact, they joke, but not too rudely, just to show that she's after all just a pair of fairly sensitive boobs in this exchange. (this happens mostly when the wannabe alpha males aren't too sure of the group dynamics yet, but know that the girl is hott or has powerful friends)
3. They try to drag her in on the joke - probably with some success, since, let's not forget - in this example the guys are very funny. What they do is often this; they say something like, yeah, you right (insert chummy nickname they have for well liked alpha female friendtype person), but you see our examples only apply to bitter/sad/old/sag-titted/ugly bitches, not to smart hott chicks like YOU. (insert hilarious joke about sag-titted ugly bitches here)
What's she supposed to do to be true to herself here? of course she doesn't want to deny that she's smart and hott, but on the other hand she doesn't want to sell out her integrity, she doesn't want to overreact - and she has this horrible feeling that she's reacted too much already in a situation where no one else reacted, neither male nor female, and these guys like her and they are right now devoting all of their humorous sexist funny-spark to keep that flame of mutual intellectual affection glowing.
No seriously, what's that girl supposed to do?
The truth is that she can betray herself or she can loose the candy of guy affection - and any other option is a tightrope. She knows that she will one day, if she lives long enough, be that sad, sag-titted ugly bitch - and maybe she's been it already, because there is always at least one millisecond in our lives where we are her, if we're female.
So, screw the bitch or screw the boys. It always comes down to that at some point if you gain some female alpha points - but hey, at least you get that 20 second window where someone might listen to you perhaps.
