I'm officially depressed.

And it's an odd depression, for the most part disconnected from my personal life, and yet it's like something has curdled inside me and I can't escape the smell no matter how hard I try.

Ok, so I knew about the Iran-Contra Affair, most people do, but after making a close case study of the record documentation case (for my thesis) I feel like a doctor studying a case where another physician murdered his patient in cold blood and then walked free with not even having to go to court.

People people people! DO you know what happened? Do people in this country (US) really know how many thousands of records the Reagan administration personally destroyed and withheld? Bush the elder was vice President at that time, and there is clear evidence (on paper) that he played a huge part in this. By the time this was investigated he was at the end of his own presidency, and used those last scraps of time he had to pre-pardon his compadres in crime, like Oliver North.

But people, they are criminals. They broke a huge variety of laws that this country holds dear. They DESTROYED and WITHHELD evidence (records). (luckily a lot was found elsewhere due to sloppiness and a disregard of judicial citizens intelligence and thoroughness).

There are ample reasons to sound like a conspiracy-theorist when I spell out the fact that, after Daddy Bush was part of selling weapons to Iran (also proved on papers that did not reach the shredder, signature and all), Bush Jr is now pondering a war with that nation over weaponry. This is a story that repeats itself in US modern history, BUT...

Bush Jr has done more than that. Never mind Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, never mind that he can sound like a moron, you see, he is not.
After his re-election Bush Jr took hold of his presidential library and changed a few very interesting laws.

Presidential papers, documentation, archives, used to be open to view after 12 years, this was something that enabled such an investigation as for instance the Iran-Contra scandal.

This ability to investigate is now mere history, because Bush Jr changed the law so that presidential papers can be closed files for an indefinite period of time. People's right to a transparent government has been shat upon.

And most people don't even understand it, here in the US!

This government can damn well do almost what they want now. And you can bet your sweet ass that the paper shredders go warm after certain meetings in the White House. The days of Watergate and Iran-Contras are almost nostalgically luminous now...those were the days my friend...when the citizens had at least a minimal capacity to hold the power responsible for what they did.

That door is pretty much closed. And the citizens dis-elected it themselves lacking better sense.

Sometimes I wonder how many morons really exist in the US. Because I'm spoiled and live in a cocoon, I only know intelligent people here, both irl and on the Internet...but there has to be a healthy amount of morons around, just pleading: oooh yeah, take away my rights..oh yeah baby, just fuck me in the ass with a splintered broom!

So yeah, this is bumming me out actively...because dude, when you take a good look on all those records and evidence, and all those pre-pardoned bastards never even making it to court, and big daddy's boy getting re-elected, I would say that this country sure loves its biggest criminals.

There is a difference between knowing about the case from newspapers and tv, and studying the case and the files documented by archivists,
and yet..what was said on tv at the time should have been enough for intelligent people. And I know that there are intelligent people, but apparently not enough.

It's official, I want to live in the reality of The West Wing instead of this reality.
I get excited when Toby calls the President at 5.45 in the morning and says: Mr President, I may have found a way to save Social Security...

Oh yeah baby, that makes me more excited than when Veronica Mars finds the killer, Galactica is under attack or SG-1 saves the galaxy, nowadays.

Save social security Toby, go Toby! (I love it when he almost smiles once every third year), I would vote for Bartlet if I could, but the bitter fact is that the biggest myth is the one that is the closest to truth.

And that's were I see this country standing today.

ETA: This article is two years old, but shows that Bush Jr has been at it since 2001, with the archival scam act.
