The Moomin books by Finnish author Tove Jansson are wonderful! If you don't mind reading good childrens' lit, I can wholeheartedly recommend them. The first few books start off as pure (but good and very unusual) children books, but the last 3-4 books, of which "Moominvalley in November" is the very last one in the suite, are considered all-age and fairly philosophical.
